Heating & Cooling

What Is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is a single system that both heats and cools your home. It keeps you cool in summer and warm through an Idaho winter, often using less energy than a traditional furnace and air conditioner.

Quick Answer

One System for Every Season

A heat pump does not burn fuel to make heat. Instead, it moves heat from one place to another using refrigerant, the same way an air conditioner does. In summer it moves heat out of your home. In winter it reverses and brings heat in.

Because it moves heat instead of creating it, a heat pump can deliver two to three times more heat energy than the electricity it uses.

How It Works

How a Heat Pump Heats and Cools

A part called a reversing valve switches the direction refrigerant flows. That one switch lets the same system move heat out of your home or into it.

Summer

Cooling Mode

The heat pump pulls heat and humidity out of the air inside your home and releases it outdoors, exactly like a central air conditioner.

Winter

Heating Mode

The system reverses. It pulls heat from the outdoor air, even when it’s cold outside, and moves it indoors to warm your home.

Idaho Winters

Do Heat Pumps Work in Idaho?

Yes. Older heat pumps struggled in the cold, but today’s cold-climate models keep heating efficiently well below freezing. For most Idaho homes, a properly sized heat pump can handle the bulk of the heating season on its own.

For the coldest nights, a heat pump can be paired with a backup heat source so your home stays comfortable no matter what the forecast says.

Benefits

Why Homeowners Choose Heat Pumps

Energy Efficiency

Moving heat takes far less energy than making it, which can lower heating costs compared with electric resistance heat and older systems.

Year-Round Comfort

One system handles summer cooling and winter heating, with steady, even temperatures and better humidity control.

One System to Maintain

Replace a separate furnace and AC with a single system. No burning fuel inside the home for heat.

FAQ

Common Questions About Heat Pumps

What is the difference between a heat pump and an air conditioner?

In cooling mode they work the same way. The difference is that a heat pump can reverse to heat your home in winter, while an air conditioner only cools.

Can a heat pump replace my furnace?

In many Idaho homes, yes. A cold-climate heat pump can handle most or all of your heating. Some homeowners keep their furnace as backup in a dual-fuel setup. We will recommend what fits your home.

How long does a heat pump last?

Most heat pumps last about 10 to 15 years. Because they run year-round, annual maintenance helps them reach the upper end of that range.

Is a heat pump expensive to run?

Heat pumps are among the most efficient ways to heat and cool a home. Your actual costs depend on your home’s size, insulation and local energy rates, so we will walk through the numbers with you.

Can I finance a heat pump?

Yes. ACFLEX offers monthly payment options on new systems. Visit our Financing page to check your options in a few minutes with no impact to your credit score.
