Quick Answer
Repair or Replace?
If your system is more than 10 to 15 years old, needs repairs more than once a year, and your energy bills keep rising, replacement is usually the smarter long-term choice. A newer system costs less to run, comes with a fresh warranty, and is far less likely to fail on the hottest or coldest day of the year.
- Most AC units and heat pumps last 10 to 15 years
- Furnaces typically last 15 to 20 years
- Repeat repairs are a sign the system is wearing out

Warning Signs
5 Signs Your System Needs Replacing
Your system is 10 to 15 years old
Most air conditioners and heat pumps last about 10 to 15 years, and heavy summer use can shorten that. Older equipment is also much less efficient than today’s models. Many older AC units use R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer produced and is expensive to recharge.
You're calling for repairs more often
One repair in several years is normal. Two or three in a single season is a pattern. A rule of thumb many technicians use: multiply the system’s age by the repair cost. If the total is over $5,000, replacement is usually the better investment.
Your energy bills keep climbing
If your usage hasn’t changed but your bills have, your system is likely working harder to deliver the same comfort. Worn parts, refrigerant leaks and lost efficiency show up on the power bill well before the system stops working.
Some rooms are too hot or too cold
Uneven temperatures, rooms that never get comfortable, or a system that runs nonstop without reaching the thermostat setting can mean the unit can no longer keep up, or was never sized correctly for the home.
A major part has failed
A failed compressor, cracked heat exchanger or leaking coil can cost a large share of a new system. On older equipment, that money usually goes further toward a new, efficient system with a full warranty.
Compare
When to Repair vs. When to Replace
Use this as a starting point. Your technician will confirm based on your system’s condition.
Usually Repair
- System is under 10 years old
- First major repair in years
- Repair is a small share of replacement cost
- Comfort and energy bills are steady
Usually Replace
- System is 12 or more years old
- Several repairs in the last two years
- Compressor or heat exchanger has failed
- Bills rising, rooms uneven, or system uses R-22
FAQ
Common Questions About HVAC Replacement
How long does an HVAC system last?
Most air conditioners and heat pumps last 10 to 15 years. Gas furnaces often last 15 to 20 years. Regular maintenance helps a system reach the upper end of that range.
Is it worth repairing a 15-year-old AC?
Small repairs can make sense, but a major repair on a 15-year-old system usually doesn’t. Multiply the age by the repair cost. If the result is over $5,000, replacement is typically the better value.
Should I replace my furnace and AC at the same time?
Often, yes. Matched systems are designed to work together, and replacing both at once usually costs less than two separate installs. If one unit is much newer, we will tell you whether it’s worth keeping.
Can I finance a new HVAC system?
Yes. ACFLEX offers monthly payment options on new systems. Visit our Financing page to check your options in a few minutes with no impact to your credit score.
